Chain Stitch Tapestry Cushion Covers

Chainstitch, be it in wool, silk or cotton is done by hook rather than a needle. The hook is referred as an "Aari"; it covers a much larger area than needlework in the same amount of time and has the same quality. All the embroidery is executed on white cotton fabric, pre-shrunk by the manufacturers. Tiny stitches are used to cover the entire area, the figures or motifs are worked in striking colors, the background in a single color comprising of series of coin sized concentric circles. These circles impart dynamism and a sense of movement to the design.

Crewel Fabric Bedspreads

Crewel Work is a special kind of embroidery done with a pointed hook on thick Cotton 'Dosooti' fabric hand-woven . Bedspreads embroidered in crewel work are of two types: one uses the cotton fabric used for crewel drapes and the other one uses a much lighter soft-feel cotton. Soft cotton bedspreads can also be used as bedsheets. Crewel Work Bedspreads come in a range of embroidery patterns and colors; the cost of fabric being determined by the amount of embroidery work on it and whether single or double-ply wool is worked on the fabric.

The embroidery is done allover on a cotton 'dosooti' cloth base. Embroidery is done in wool using 2-ply yarn. ArtSilk yarn is also used in the embroidery and the rug looks like a carpet in which the pile is substituted by the texture.

Namdas/ Gabbehs are a kind of mattress. These are made by felting the wool rather than weaving it. A low quality wool, mixed with a small quantity of cotton, is used to manufacture Namdas. They are usually of two types, plain and embroidered. Namdas and Gabbehs are embroidered with woolen thread, which gives color, beauty and strength to them.

Prices of namdas depend upon their quality of wool, pattern (plain or embroidered), size of the product and the neatness in designs. Far less expensive are these colorful floor coverings made from woolen fiber manually pressed into shape.

Namdas may be oblong or circular and come in a range of sizes, maximum being 6x8 feet, although larger sizes can be made on order. Background color is usually white; black and red are used often to add to the variety.

Namdas are a cheap substitute for carpets and come in a variety of colors and designs.
